Aldo Leopold Wilderness Area

New Mexico has always impressed me as having the thinnest veneer of civilization of any place I've visited in the USA...it's just too damn close to the violent history of the three cultures that inhabit it. Modern law enforcement doesn't take the place of dealing with enemies on your own terms. This rest area is on the west side of 180 along the Gila Mountains, just about where you'd want to stop between Reserve and Deming for a break.
Someone got what was coming to him good, here. I've been here three times over the years, and while they cleaned up most of the blood, there are still some stains. I guess they didn't think it was worth replacing the glass with the bullet holes. After all, this is New Mexico.
